Akatori is a hand-drawn action platformer about a girl pulled out of her own world and dropped into one built on cycles of destruction. Ruri arrives with nothing but a sword and the growing suspicion that everything around her has happened before, and the game answers that suspicion by putting time manipulation at the centre of both its combat and its traversal. Built by Contrast Games across four distinct realms, it favours precision and readability over spectacle, and every frame of its animation is drawn to make that precision legible at speed.

🌀 Time Is A Tool, Not A Gimmick

Rewinding and bending time is woven into the moment-to-moment play rather than bolted on for a handful of set pieces. Rooms are constructed around it, enemies punish you for forgetting it, and the harder platforming segments simply cannot be cleared without it. By the midpoint you stop thinking of it as a special ability and start treating it as part of your movement.

Encounters are built on readable tells and tight windows. Ruri's sword work is fast but committal, so trading blows is rarely the answer and positioning almost always is. Enemies are introduced one idea at a time and then combined, which keeps the difficulty curve honest rather than arbitrary.

Each realm builds toward a boss that functions as an exam on everything the region taught you. Phases shift the arena and the ruleset mid-fight, and clearing one usually hands you the technique the next stretch of the game expects you to already have. Rather than one sprawling interconnected map, Akatori moves through four self-contained worlds, each with its own palette, hazards, enemy roster and rules. The variety keeps the run from settling into repetition, and the transitions between them carry the story of the loop Ruri is trying to break.

The hand-drawn pixel art carries far more frames per action than the genre usually bothers with, and it pays off directly in how the game plays — attacks, dodges and enemy wind-ups all read instantly. A composed soundtrack shifts between regions and does most of the emotional lifting in the quieter stretches.
