The Long Dark (2025) — Free Download for Mac

The Long Dark is an exploration and survival game where solo players must fend for themselves as they explore vast, frozen wilderness areas. There are no zombies here - just you, the cold, and whatever Mother Nature has to offer.

The Long Dark is brought to you by Hinterland Studio, an independent game developer staffed by industry veterans who have worked on many well-known franchises including Far Cry, Red Faction, Saints Row, God of War, Mass Effect, Knights of the Old Republic, Dragon Age, Company of Heroes, and more. The Long Dark is the team's first attempt at creating a thought-provoking, unique, independent game that pushes the boundaries of what's possible.

Part of the first story season of The Long Dark, WINTERMUTE consists of two of the five episodes. In December 2018, in the Redux update, we completely reworked both episodes: we changed the quest system, rewrote the plot, dialogue, animation, and more.

EPISODE 1. "Don't Go Meekly"

Long-haul pilot Will Mackenzie (the player character) and Dr. Astrid Greenwood are separated when a mysterious flash of light causes their plane to crash in the wilds of northern Canada. Desperate to survive and find Astrid, Mackenzie comes to the town of Milton, where he begins to understand the scale of this silent disaster.

EPISODE 2. "Light Fugue"

Mackenzie's search for Astrid takes him deep into the snow-covered wilderness. A mysterious trapper may be able to help him, but can he be trusted?

The first two episodes of WINTERMUTE take up about 15 hours of play. The next three episodes are included in the price of the game and will be unlocked for free as they become available.

The characters are voiced by Jennifer Hale, Mark Meer, David Hayter, and Elias Toufexis (episode three). The music was composed by Cris Velasco.
