The game takes place in the fictional kingdom of Lordran, reminiscent of medieval Europe. Lordran is afflicted by a curse that turns its inhabitants into undead; the main character, also a living dead, is tasked with rekindling the sacred fire and restoring the order of things.

The gameplay of Dark Souls is based on exploring the world, finding key items and destroying bosses; the game is distinguished by a high level of difficulty - it is assumed that the game character will die over and over again, and the player will learn from their mistakes.

The re-release contains the full version of Dark Souls and the Artorias of the Abyss add-on.

The add-on adds a side branch to the main plot of Dark Souls, which sends the protagonist back in time to Oolacile and tells the legend of the Voidwalker. As well as new locations, new enemies, new items and an arena for PvP mode. This add-on is also a patch, changing and fixing many aspects of the console versions of Dark Souls.
